WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- On Thursday, Metro announced it awarded a $151.1 million contract to the KONE Corporation to replace or modernize 128 of its escalators by 2020.

The move is part of General Manager Richard Sarles' capital rebuilding effort "Metro Forward."

"Today's contract award advances our commitment to improve escalator reliability for our customers for years to come. This is about reconstructive surgery, not Band-Aid solutions," said Sarles in a statement released Thursday.
