WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- The renewed debate over gun control reignited a month ago, in the horror of the Newtown School shooting. A special task force headed by Vice President Joe Biden will present its recommendations for change to President Obama. The proposals haven't been released to the public but we do have some idea about what the President is considering.
The proposals likely include mental health background checks, longer prison sentences for gun traffickers and more information on violent video games. The President also wants a ban on assault rifles, but that proposal faces opposition from the NRA and some lawmakers. Some lawmakers have said they don't think such a ban can pass through Congress.
The President says if Congress cannot pass federal legislation, then he may go it alone and use an executive order.
Also on Tuesday, state lawmakers in New York are expected to pass the most restrictive gun control law in the nation.
