WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) - Conventional wisdom says it will be very tough for the President to make any real headway in restricting access to weapons or doing anything much about gun violence in this country.

But conventional wisdom is often correct, that is, until it isn't.

Six months ago in the aftermath of the Aurora atrocity I stood right here and said there is no gun control debate in this country--that we were incapable of having one.

Tonight I'm back to say I was wrong. I'd just horribly underestimated what it would take to get the conversation started. But the good news is the American people now seem to be out ahead of the idealogues on these issues. Gun rights advocates say we need armed guards in schools but want no new firearms restrictions. Gun control advocates pooh pooh the guard idea, preferring a ban on large capacity magazines and so-called assault weapons.

But according to a new ABC News/Washington Post survey, majorities of Americans now say take a look at the ideas from both sides. And don't forget background checks for all gun buyers and more mental health care.

President Obama says he'll fight for broad gun violence reforms regardless of the politics. But the best thing about a real debate on a tough issue is that every once in awhile, politics can change.
