UNDATED (WUSA) -- Police in Montgomery County are warning residents about suspects stealing their outgoing mail.
According to authorities, the thefts have occurred since November 2012. In many cases, the suspects steal the mail from mailboxes, remove checks for bills, alter and attempt to cash the checks at area banks.
Police now recommend citizens to drop off important mail at local post offices or in a U.S. Postal Service mailbox. Another option is not to use the "flag" on the mailbox. Anyone with information on this ongoing crime is asked to call Montgomery County Police or the non-emergency line at (301) 279-8000.
