WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) - What is it about human beings, that some guys in matching outfits smashing into some other guys in different outfits can spawn the sort of passion that makes grown men go out in public in dresses and hog noses, gets whole families to spend thousands on jerseys and tickets, and gets me just a little verklempt when I see that classic Superbowl photo of Redskins great John Riggins?
And its surely not just us or just football. Remember how Cleveland fans lost their collective minds when Lebron James decided to take his talents to South Beach? I mean, it is just a game, right?
Well, not to sports fans. Personally, I think it's the drama of a big game, plus the addictive high of unfettered escapism. But even more than that, researchers suggest that as social animals, we identify truly madly and deeply with our team.
In other words, we are the Redskins and the Redskins are us. So if they lose come Sunday, that really is your heart breaking. But if they win, well, I'm always looking for a new reason to get a little verklempt.
