DALE CITY, Va. (WUSA) -- Prince William County police say a driver has been charged after a police officer was involved in a crash in the Gideon Road and Smoketown Road area near Potomac Mills on Friday morning.
Police say an officer was headed westbound on Opitz Boulevard in his cruiser when 50-year-old Nuii Aryee Mensah of Woodbridge ignored a red light at the intersection with Gideon Drive and hit the cruiser. At impact, the officer lost consciousness but regained it again while at the scene, according to police.
The officer was flown to a hospital and treated for her injuries. She has been released from the hospital, say police.
Mensah was not injured.
Police say they later determined Mensah's car had faulty brakes. Mensah has been charged with reckless driving - bad brakes and released on a summons. Mensah has a court date scheduled for February 13.
