TRIANGLE, Va. (WUSA) -- Prince William County police say a Triangle woman tired to kill herself and her 3-year-old daughter by lighting her house on fire but later changed her mind when the fire became too intense. She later drove the child to a family member's home and when driving in Fairfax County, her car struck a tree, say police.

Twenty-six-year-old Julia Franzke Vazquez is now charged with attempted first degree murder and arson to occupied dwelling after the incident on Wednesday on Fuller Heights Road.

According to police, Vazquez gave her daughter cough medicine to make the child fall asleep before starting a fire in the bathroom "with the intent to kill them both." She later put out the fire when it became too intense, then took her child to a family member.

The family member took the child to the hospital to be treated for her burns. The child was later released.

Vazquez remains in the hospital for further treatment and evaluation.
