TAKOMA PARK, Md. (WUSA) -- High winds have been wreaking havoc across the area, bringing down trees.
A tree down on power lines in Takoma Park caused about 1700 power outages Thursday morning.
Pepco contractors are trying to restore power before it gets dark.
"I heard a big boom that sounded like a transformer, " said Reed Thompson, who knew immediately what caused his neighborhood to go dark.
"It's been windy. The lights went off, then on then off again. For good," he said.
The massive tree at Maple Avenue and Tulip Avenue crashed down on power lines and crushed a neighbor's car blowing out the windows. No one was reportedly hurt.
Several other trees across the region came down. Crews had to close down Georgetown Pike at Swinks Mill Road because of a downed tree.
Another large tree fell across Burke Station Road near Laurel Street in Fairfax.
Pepco has been able to restore most of the 1700 customers. Only a few hundred people are now without power.
Pepco hopes to restore the electricity by midnight.
