Herndon, Va. (from Town of Herndon government)
HERNDON, Va. (WUSA) -- The town of Herndon received a big honor from Forbes.com. According to Forbes, the third largest town in Virginia is one of "America's Friendliest Towns."
Herndon ranks number 12 on the list. Forbes writes:
"...about 46% of the adult population totes college degrees, this diverse town is situated near the so-called Dulles Technology Corridor, where a slew of companies like Verizon and Microsoft have outposts.
"Community activities abound, for example, free concerts on Fridays, farmers' markets, an annual Motorcycle Poker Run, and variety of nature-themed festivals and initiatives. Nextdoor says its Herndon members organize fundraisers, Halloween haunted houses, and community service events."
Herndon mayor Lisa Merkel said in a statement on Friday, "It's wonderful that the world is finding out what those of us who live and work here already know - that people in Herndon are uniquely friendly, open and caring...I hope this ranking will inspire those who haven't visited our town to come see us, join in our events, and patronize our businesses."
