(USA TODAY) -- Police in Scottsdale, Ariz., delayed the start of classes at Cocopah Middle School on Wednesday after an armed person was seen on school property, KPNX reported.

The Arizona Republic reported that a cafeteria worker called police about 6 a.m. after seeing a man with long hair, wearing a long black trench coat and carrying a pistol, according to Sgt. Mark Clark, a spokesman for the Scottsdale Police Department.

KPNX reported that parents were asked to drop off their children at The Catholic Community of the Blessed Sacrament nearby until the campus is cleared.

Fox 10 News reported that a parent, Becky Almarez, had received an automated call from the school principal at 7:25 a.m. local time.

Almarez told Fox 10 that her daughter had sent a text message saying that she was in a safe place.
