SEAT PLEASANT, Md. (WUSA) -- A father and his child, whom he was carrying in his arms, were shot in a stairwell in the 6800 block of Seat Pleasant Drive on Wednesday morning. The toddler's father was pronounced dead at the scene, say authorities.
The Prince George's County State's Attorney confirms that the victim Nichoh Mayhew, 25, was slated to testify in a murder trial in February. Law enforcement sources tell 9News that investigators are trying to determine if he was murdered for cooperating with police.
Mayhew's mother, Cynthia Dinkins-Mayhew, says she doesn't need investigators to give her an official motive for her son's slaying. Late Wednesday night she told 9News' Ken Molestina that she believed her 25-year old son was killed because he was set to be a key witness in a murder case scheduled for February.
Dinkins-Mayhew is blaming the Prince George's County States Attorney's office for her son's death, saying , "Ya'll can go home and hug your kids every night and I can't...I can't."
She said the office didn't do enough to protect her son. She added,"They should have done a better job, but their main focus was to try and lock people up...but my child is gone."
A spokesman for The Prince George's County States Attorney's office said they were going to wait for the police investigation to officially determine a motive for Nicoh Mayhew's shooting death before they make any comment on this case.
The toddlerm a 2-year-old boy, is expected to survive, reports WUSA 9 reporter Bruce Leshan.
Officials say they responded to the scene at approximately 10:15 a.m. Wednesday. Officials believe the father was targeted.
A police spokesperson says two people were seen fleeing in a black BMW sedan with tinted windows and unknown Maryland tags.
