FREDERICK, Md. (WUSA) -- A driver died after a car struck a tree and caught on fire on Thursday morning, but two passengers were able to escape, according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies arrived at southbound Gambrill Park Road just south of Coxey Brown Road to investigate the crash at approximately 4:30 a.m.
According to authorities, the car was traveling south on Gambrill Park Road when it failed to go around a turn and went off the road. Then, the car struck a tree and caught on fire.
Authorities say that 22-year-old Jonathan M. Horne of Frederick, Md. was trapped inside the car when it caught fire and died at the scene. Two passengers in his car, 25-year-old Philp L. Schmidt and 24-year-old Dean A. Wendig, both of Frederick, were able to get our of the car and call 911.
Wendig was flown to John Hopkins Bayview Medical Center while Schmidt was taken by ambulance to Meritus Medical Center. They are undergoing treatment.
