VALLEY LEE, Md. (WUSA) -- Last Friday, two children reported that someone in a white van tried to make contact with them while they were at a bus stop in the Valley Lee area. Now, St. Mary's County Bureau of Criminal Investigations officials say the children made up the incident.
Investigators determined their report was false after interviewing multiple witnesses in the area at the time the incident allegedly occurred. Further investigation revealed that two elementary school children concocted the incident, according to authorities. Authorities did not provide a reason why the children made up the story.
Captain Terry L. Black released a statement on Tuesday, saying, "Although this particular report was fabricated the safety and security of our children is paramount. We continue to encourage parents and students to report all suspicious activity and/or individuals."
