PHOENIX (KPNX/WUSA) -- A man in Phoenix, Ariz., was paralyzed but unable to speak. He told his wife he wanted to live by blinking and is now on his way to recovering.
After suffering a stroke, Mike Dils was taken to a hospital and was in a coma. He couldn't talk or move. He was "locked in" his body.
The doctors told his wife Cheryl that this is how Mike would be forever and that she had a decision to make. Mike had always said he didn't want to live this way, but she couldn't pull the plug.
Cheryl thought Mike was still in there somewhere and was looking for a sign, so she went to his room to ask if he wanted to die. She asked him first, "do you know what's going on?" He blinked once, which meant "yes." Then, Cheryl ask him, "Do you want to live?" He blinked once.
