SEVERN, Md. (WUSA) -- A man tried to rob a 12-year-old boy as he was walking down the street in Severn, Md. on Thursday afternoon but failed, say police. 

The 18-year-old man apparently pointed a plastic toy handgun at the child while demanding to have the boy's coat in the area of Indian Drive and Clearwater Court, according to Anne Arundel County Police. 

The boy refused and fled.

Dejon Malik Arnold was later identified as the suspect and charged with attempted robbery, attempted theft under $1,000 and second degree assault.
