LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. (WUSA) -- Monday morning, grief counselors are at Sanders Corner Elementary School in Loudoun County to help students deal with the sudden death of Principal Kathleen Hwang. A school spokesperson says that they mentioned the principal's death on the morning announcements. A principal from a neighboring school is overseeing the school.
Hwang was killed on Wednesday in a traffic accident near her home in Sterling. She had stepped into the street, but not in the crosswalk, when she was hit by an 18-year-old driver. He was not charged.
Loudoun County Public Schools released a statement on Friday after hearing the news.
"This is a sad time in the life of this vibrant school, and we are grateful for the years of outstanding leadership given to Sanders Corner by Mrs. Hwang since 2005."
Hwang had been at Sanders Corner Elementary School since 2005.
