WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- Food and Friends has been preparing Thanksgiving meals since 1988 for the DC community, and Thursday was no different.
The organization makes meals for those suffering from HIV, AIDS, cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.
"The hours are early but it's totally worth it," volunteer Philip Fletcher said.
Fletcher is one of a thousand volunteers that will help prepare Food and Friends's Thanksgiving feast.
"Instead of just waking up and watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, it's doing something good on a holiday when typically you're just thinking about yourself," Fletcher said.
Food and Friends prepares meals for about 3,500 families.
All of it will then be loaded into vans and hand delivered by the volunteers.
Food and Friends may have more volunteers than they know what to do with on Thanksgiving, but not during the rest of the year.
And remember, they do these food deliveries year round.
