Washington (WUSA) -- The much anticipated 495 Express Lanes opened for
business this week, but the new road brought new problems and confusion to beltway drivers. With several accidents occuring at the entrance to the lanes on I-495 in Springfield, project managers had to quickly update electronic message signs and lane markings.
The Express Lanes are now the two left lanes of the beltway for 14 miles between Springfield to past Tysons Corner. The lanes operate 24/7 and require an EZ pass. HOV-3 ride for free with the new EZ Pass FLEX.
During the adjustment period, Virginia State Police say they are allowing a 5-day grace period for those who ride the lanes without an EZ Pass.
