Let's Be Real: Tempted By What We Like

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) -  When we see high profile marital cheaters busted on the national news, we often wonder why people are so foolish, so often.

I don't think it's all that complicated.  It all comes down to the difference between what we value and what we like. For example, I value the idea of a six-pack stomach, but I like eating potato chips and fancy cupcakes, so the softer sagging look is a bit more likely. Same for monogamy. Oh, we give it lots of lip service and anyone who appears to be successfully pulling it off gets major kudos.

We value it highly but let's be real. I think we actually like the idea of crazy hot sex with someone new. How do I know this?? Well, look at the most popular tv shows, our advertising, even the fact that this crazy David Petraeus news story is all anyone wants to talk about. Easy to get us all worked up, at least for the moment.

On the other hand, a good solid relationship is lot like that six pack: really hard to get, even harder to keep for any length of time. After all, there's a lot of potato chips and cupcakes out there. And let's be real: most of us are terrible at saying no. Doesn't mean it's not worth doing. Just means that perhaps we ought to acknowledge how tempted we can be by what we like, and how tough it can be to hold on to what we value.
