FAIRMOUNT HEIGHTS, Md. (WUSA) -- Firefighters in Prince George's County rescued two people from a burning home in Fairmount Heights early Wednesday morning. Another person escaped before firefighters arrived at the scene.
Prince George's County fire officials tell 9 NEWS NOW they received a report of a two-story home on fire in the 5300 block of Sheriff Road near Addison Road around 2:36 a.m. Since the burning house was only a few blocks away from the nearest firehouse, crews were able to respond quickly.
Firefighters found flames coming from the 2nd floor of the residence, which were extinguished in about 15 minutes.
Two people were rescued from the home. Officials say a man in his 60s had burn and smoke inhalation injuries and was transported to a burn unit in serious condition. Another man, in his 70s, suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital in "good condition."
Approximately $35,000 worth of damage is left behind from the fire.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
