WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- D.C. firefighters spent hours battling flames inside a warehouse. The fire started late Wednesday night on Morse Street in Northeast Washington but was still smoldering on Thursday morning.

The Old Union Market building houses storage space for a large number of businesses. It appears the structure has a concrete roof and walls, which made it much more difficult for firefighters to get inside safely.

Currently, the street is closed to traffic in the 1200 block of 4th St NE. Dozens of business owners are frustrated and furious about crews shutting down the streets and shutting down power in a 2 block radius of the building because that means they can't open their businesses for customers...and it's costing them dearly.

Four unoccupied buildings have been condemned, say police. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.

The Old Union Market is different from the New Union Market, which was rebuilt because it too caught fire. Any good news out of this event is that there's hope that the fire may lead to revitalization of the whole area.
