ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WUSA) -- An Alexandria woman has died and an Ashburn man has been charged after a crash on Interstate 81 in Pulaski County, say Virginia State Police.
The three-vehicle crash happened on Thursday just after 1 p.m. in the southbound lanes at mile marker 87. It involved two tractor trailers and a Ford Escape.
According to state police, the tractor trailer truck was traveling southbound when it came to traffic stopped for a lane closure for bridge construction. The driver wasn't able to brake in time and swerved the tractor trailer to the left to try to avoid hitting any cars. But when the tractor trailer swerved, it hit a Ford Escape.
The tractor trailer overturned onto its side in the median. The Ford Escape, driven by 47-year-old Sharon L. Tate of Alexandria, Va., was pushed into the back of another tractor trailer. Tate died at the scene.
The tractor trailer drivers were not hurt.
The I-81 southbound lanes were closed until 9 p.m.
Forty-five year old Manrajbir Singh Kang, who was driving the tractor trailer that hit the Escape, has been charged with reckless driving.
