WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- The Washington Nationals couldn't have dreamed up a better start to game 5 of the Division Series.

However, like the best tragedies every written, the ending to a great story is always much more bitter than the beginning.

After taking a 6-0 lead, the Nats slowly and painfully gave the game away to a savvy St. Louis Cardinals team, 9-7, in one of the most entertaining National League Division Series game you'll ever see.

The extra base hits happened early and often for the Nationals. Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman were due to smack the ball around. The 1-2 punch accounted for the first four runs the Washington Nationals scored in the first three innings.

Michael Morse drove in two more runs with a 2-run jack in the 3rd as well. The Nationals jumped all over the Cards in the first three innings.

Jayson Werth lead off with a double. Then, Harper hit a triple off the wall to score Werth. Zimmerman would not be out-done by his teammates, hitting a 2-run home run over the right-center field wall to give the Nationals a 3-0 lead over the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1st inning.

The Cardinals did not go away quietly however. They scored on run in the 4th inning and 2 runs in the top of the 5th inning to cut the Nationals lead in half. They added another run in the top of the 7th.

St. Louis kept chipping away at the lead with a homer in the 8th by Danny Descalso.

The Nationals bounced back in the bottom of the 8th with an RBI base-hit by their backup catcher Kurt Suzuki.

The Cardinals then scored four agonizing runs in the 9th inning to take the lead 9-7.

They shut the door quickly in the bottom of the 9th to preserve the win.
