CRESAPTOWN, Md. (WUSA) -- Police are investigating the death of a state prison inmate who was found dead in his cell early Wednesday morning, according to Maryland State Police.
Charles Richardson, 28, was an inmate at the North Branch Correctional Institution in Allegany County. He had been incarcerated since 2009 and was serving a sentence of life without parole for first degree murder, assault, and handgun violations.
At about 5:00 a.m. Wednesday, correctional officers saw an inmate outside Richardson's cell with clothes that appeared to be bloodstained. When officers entered the inmate's cell, they found his cellmate, Richardson, lying under a blanket. Richardson had sustained trauma to his head.
Medics from Cresaptown pronounced Richardson deceased at the scene.
The victim's body has been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy. No motive for the apparent murder has been determined by investigators, and no charges have been filed.
