MANASSAS, Va. (WUSA) -  A suspicious black bag found on the train tracks of VRE's Manassas line on Wednesday night held gruesome contents, according to a VRE spokesman: human body parts. Police say they can not confirm the remains are human. The discovery shut down the line for hours, but VRE service was restored the following morning.

VRE was notified by City of Manassas Park police at about 6 p.m. Wednesday that a package was found on the tracks near track mile marker 30 inside the City Of Manassas Park, between Manassas and Burke. The VRE spokesman said no trains were in the area at the time the package was found and reported.

Trains were halted, and when VRE says when police examined the package, they discovered human remains. Manassas City Police wouldn't confirm that information but did have a medical examiner on the scene. VRE trains were halted  for several hours due to the incident while police search the area seeking other evidence.

The VRE train 331, 333, 335 and 337 were affected by the incident, stranding more than 1500 riders. Train 337 backed up to the Alexandria station, while VRE worked on getting buses to Clifton and Burke for passenger transfer.

Thursday morning, VRE is back to normal. Manassas Drive is reopening soon.
