WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA) -- Qsymia, which may be the newest miracle diet drug burst onto the market today.  It's the first drug in over a decade that could potentially result in substantial weight loss.

Approved in July by the FDA, prescription-only Qsymia could potentially result in a whopping 10 percent weight loss for those who take the pill.  "We haven't had a drug really in thirteen years that has come out that is associated with more than just a few percentage points of weight loss," says Maryjain Hynes, M.D., a Weight Management Physician at the George Washington University Medical Faculty Associates.  "This drug is associated with 10 percent weight loss, which for us, is a very big number."

What makes the drug work are two super ingredients that tackle weight loss: topamax, which creates an extra-full feeling after a meal, and phentermine, an appetite-curbing aid.

Those who have unsuccessfully attempted to lose weight have high hopes about this new drug. "I've had 2 or 3 patients who asked me when this drug was coming out.  They were very excited about it.  Particularly in those that have tried over and over again to lose weight without any success, and do not want to have gastric bypass as an alternative," says Dr. Hynes.

However, Qsymia is not for everyone.  Women who may become pregnant are strongly advised not to take Qsymia, as the drug carries a serious risk of birth defects.  But for women of child-bearing age who have previously had negative pregnancy test before and during the time they received treatment and use effective forms of birth control, Qsymia is safe to take.

In addition to taking the pill, those who hope to benefit from the maximum results of the pill should diet and exercise accordingly.  "The hallmark of any good weight loss program is a good vegetable-based diet which means eating less than you normally eat and it means getting on some type of exercise program," says Hynes.
