WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- Ward 8 Councilman Marion Barry took to Twitter Wednesday morning to share his thoughts on American democracy, the Democratic National Convention, and Washington, D.C.'s role in the country.
Writing nearly 20 tweets over the course of an hour, all of which can be seen in the photo gallery above, Barry attacked the age-old issue of D.C.'s taxation without representation, calling District residents "disenfranchised U.S. citizens" and saying that the American people need to "see the hypocrisy of 'democracy' that we've been subjected to in DC."
Barry even offered his own suggestion for resolution: "To avoid partisan politics, bring in the REPUBLICAN Puerto Rico. States come in twos, one rep. one dem. SOMETHING needs to be done."
"How can we tell others the Democratic is the party of the people, when the people of DC have been denied representation for so long? #FREEDC," Barry continued on his Twitter diatribe. "Let's be honest: Does DC have to be "gentrified" to get voting rights? Is that what we are wating for? Democracy has no color, right?"
