WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- If you head to Home Depot or Lowe's with some regularity, this one's for you. It's no surprise Americans love their Do-It-Yourself projects. Express yourself creatively in your home. Save some money by doing it yourself. Improve the value of your biggest asset. These are all "value adds."
But here's a big caveat: Know your limits. You could actually be hurting your home's value by not bringing in an expert. Even worse, you could be putting your family in jeopardy.
A group of home inspectors in Minnesota put together a photo gallery of DIY projects gone bad on StructureTech1.com. Check some of them out in the attached video.
Unless you are trained in some of these repairs, call in the experts when you are working on electrical or structural changes to your house. You may even be breaking the law by doing it yourself if you don't have the proper permits.
