Tempe, AZ (Sports Network) - John Skelton will be the starting quarterback for
the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks.
Neither Skelton or Kevin Kolb impressed in the preseason, but Cardinals coach
Ken Whisenhunt had to make a decision.
"We feel like the quarterback that gives us the best chance to win is John
Skelton," Whisenhunt said.
Skelton threw for 131 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in the
preseason, while Kolb passed for 203 yards, one touchdown and three
interceptions.
Kolb was traded to the Cardinals on July 28, 2011, in exchange for cornerback
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second-round draft pick in the 2012 NFL
Draft.
The Houston product started the first seven games of the 2011 season for
Arizona, but suffered a turf toe injury against the Baltimore Ravens
in Week 8.
Kolb, who returned in Week 13, suffered concussion-like symptoms after taking
a blow to the head against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 14.
The 28-year-old Kolb sat out the remainder of the season. He threw for 1,955
yards, nine touchdowns and eight interceptions in 2011.
Meanwhile, the 24-year-old Skelton passed for 1,913 yards, 11 touchdowns and
14 interceptions in eight games last season.
The Cardinals open the regular season at home against the Seahawks on Sept. 9.
