FORT WASHINGTON,  Md. (WUSA) - A  Prince George's County police officer is in serious condition after accidentally shooting himself in the leg while responding to report of a fox attack.

According to a police spokesperson, a woman called police just after 5 p.m. to report she had been bitten by a possibly rabid fox. Three officers responded to the call in the 1300 block of Clarion Rd.

The fox charged the three officers and one drew his weapon as they all began backing away from the animal. While stepping back from the animal, the officer tripped on some steps, accidentally shooting himself in the leg below the calf. He fired again and ultimately killed the fox.

The injured officer was taken to a local hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.  A routine investigation into the incident is underway.
