Sgt. David V. Williams of Frederick, Md., died Aug 18 near Kandahar, Afghanistan

JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash.  (WUSA/AP) -  Sgt. David V. Williams, 24, of Frederick, Md. died Aug. 18, near Kandahar, Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense.

The cause of death is under investigation. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

Williams entered the U.S the U.S. Army in August 2008 and was stationed at Camp Red Cloud, South Korea. He arrived at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in February 2011 and was assigned to the Headquarters - Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team. He deployed to Afghanistan with his brigade in April 2012. This was his first deployment.

He is the second serviceman from Maryland to die in Afghanistan in less than a week. On Thursday, Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Patrick Feeks of Edgewater died in a helicopter crash near Kandahar
