LINCOLNIA, Va. (WUSA) --- Police on Monday evening were canvassing an apartment complex here, handing out flyers containing the description of an Hispanic man whom they believe responsible for the rape of a five year old girl on Sunday evening.

The little girl was playing on a swing set in the common area of the apartment complex, an area surrounded by buildings with dozens of windows allowing residents to see clearly what takes place on that playground.

Between 7 and 8 o'clock on Sunday evening,  policed believe the man, described as having black hair, of medium height, with an average-to-heavy build, wearing a long-sleeved, button-down, white shirt and dark pants, led the little girl away from the playground, holding her hand as he took her to a nearby apartment building basement where the assault took place.

Police hope the flyers will prompt the memories of witnesses who didn't realize they were seeing a crime unfold.

"The sight of a man holding the hand of a five year old child might not immediately raise alarm bells, and so that's why we want to draw people's attention to this incident," said Fairfax County Police Officer Bud Walker.

There is a lesson here for parents according to resident Ed Roftus."Don't take any chances. There's too many crazy people out there now," he told 9News.
