COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WUSA) -- University of Maryland students have started an online petition to remove Chick-fil-A from the campus food court.
The online petition has been initiated on change.org and calls for the University of Maryland to replace the fast-food chain in the Stamp Student Union with a "more accepting and healthier dining option."
Organizers wrote on the site that "judging by the homophobic words and actions of top Chick-fil-A executives, and the $2 million donated by the company to homophobic organizations such as the Marriage & Family Foundation in 2010 alone, it is clear that Chick-fil-A does not represent the values embraced by the University of Maryland community."
As of Saturday afternoon, the petition had gathered 627 supporters. Organizers hope to reach 1,000 signatures.
