FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (WUSA) -- Sunday afternoon, a deputy fell unconscious while pursuing some Wal-Mart shoplifting suspects with other deputies, say Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office authorities. The deputy is recovering at the hospital.
According to authorities, pn Sunday at approximately 12:15 p.m. deputies responded to the Wal-Mart in the 10000 block of Southpoint Parkway for a shoplifting. Wal-Mart loss prevention officers had one person in custody. Three other people had fled the scene.
One deputy located a male suspect in the American Family Fitness. The suspect fled out the back door of this business and was chased. Two female suspects were taken into custody and were taken back to Wal-Mart. Other deputies responded to the area in an attempt to find the male.
Eventually, Deputy James Harney saw the suspect flee into a heavily wooded area with steep terrain. Deputy Harney reportedly was using the radio to give other deputies the direction of the suspect when he began to suffer from heat exhaustion. He was able to activate his emergency button before he went unconscious.
Deputy Liz Scott and First Sergeant Bryner found Deputy Harney unconscious but breathing. Sheriff's office authorities say several people from a homeless camp in the area helped deputies by directing additional deputies to the scene.
Deputy Harney was transported to Mary Washington Hospital. He spent the night in the hospital for observation but authorities say he seems to be recovering okay.
The male suspect was apprehended and all the suspects were charged with felony shoplifting and conspiracy to commit larceny. The suspects include Dawn Ray White of Spotsylvania, Olivia Frances Monk of Caroline, Erica Lorraine Gaine of Fredericksburg and Percil Scott.
