LEXINGTON PARK, Md. (WUSA) -- The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office says one of its student interns lost his life in a crash this past weekend.

According to officials, 17-year-old Tyler Brett Mattingly of Lexington Park was traveling northbound on Point Lookout Road in the area of Park Hall Road on Saturday at 8:24 p.m. For some reason, he lost control of his Ford Crown Victoria on the wet pavement and crossed the center line. The car went into the path of a Toyota Corolla driven by 20-year-old Lindsay Marie Lague.

Mattingly died at the scene. Lague and her passenger, Michael Anthony Dillon, were flown to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Authorities say that speed and the weather appear to be contributing factors.

They are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to call Cpl. Brian Connelly of the St Mary's County Sheriffs Office at (301) 475-4200 Ext. 9010.
