WASHINGTON (AP) - Heavy rains and strong winds kept rescue crews busy on Maryland waterways.

In Charles County, the Cobb Island volunteer fire department rescued seven people clinging to a boat that capsized in the Chesapeake Bay about 6 p.m. Saturday.

Chief Bill Goldsmith told The Washington Post that winds picked up as the storm moved in Saturday evening.

In Montgomery County, fire officials say four adults and child were rescued from an island in the Potomac River after they were not able to make it back to banks where they had entered the river in inflatable watercraft. And in Calvert County, crews responded to help a sailboat that issued a distress call after waves rose to more than three feet in the bay.
