You've probably heard of flash sale websites like Gilt and Rue La La. But the new kid on the block focuses on a niche market, university campuses.
DormStormer is the brainchild of three college students. Chase Gausepohl is a founder and works as the company's Chief Financial Officer, when he's not working his degree at Columbia University. He tells 9 News Now that in the just 6 weeks last spring, DormStormer racked up 10,000 members and sold $200,000 in merchandise. When it launches again in this academic year, the company projects it will turn a profit after 120 days.
You have to have a .edu email address to register for the sales, offering discounts up to 70 percent off, or more. Brands that have proven popular with the college crowd include Creative Rec, American Apparel and Sole Bicycle. A new feature coming this fall, students can fill up a virtual shopping car with all of the items they want to purchase and then send the link home, so Mom and Dad can pay.
