WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) -  The Olympic badminton controversy has fans and athletes buzzing over the players who were clearly not trying to win, and it cost them, as officials sent them packing.

Peggy Fox talked with some local badminton players at K2 Badminton in Sterling for their reaction.   Several were very disappointed to hear the best athletes in their sport played to lose in order to line up an easier competitor in the final.

"That's cheating.  It's wrong," said one young player.

Former professional player Jayna Amin was glad that the eight players were disqualified and thought that action reflected well on the sport and judges.

Some felt the eight players took their strategy too far, but the scandal  created a silver lining for the sport:  More awareness.  If people didn't realize badminton was in the Olympics, they do now.

Locally, it is a growing sport.  For the second time, badminton will be included in the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics.
