WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- In a Tweet to his hundreds of thousands of followers, Redskins Quarterback, Robert Griffin III announced he signed with the team.

"Well people... it's time to get to work. Off the unemployment line and oh yeah HTTR!!!!," his tweet stated at around 7:56 a.m. Wednesday.

About an hour after Griffin III's Tweet, the Redskins sent out their own tweet: " QB  signs his rookie contract at Redskins Park early this morning"

RGIII was congratulated by his adoring fans, even though the rookie hasn't taken an NFL snap yet.

This is the first step in the Redskins plan to rebuild the team around the young QB, who has brought hope to a team that hasn't had a start player at the position in years.

Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan made an attempt to get a big-name QB, when he signed former Philadelphia Eagles QB, Donovan McNabb. However, that experiment failed after one season when McNabb failed to take the team to the playoffs. In fact, McNabb failed to even end the season as the starting QB, when he was benched for Rex Grossman by Shanahan.

McNabb left town and Grossman took over the starting position for the team.

Now, two seasons later, after a mild QB controversy with John Beck, the Redskins have named RGIII their starter and Grossman will back the rookie up.

"Griffin III (6-3, 223) played three seasons at Baylor, where he appeared in 41 games with 40 starts, capturing the 2011 Heisman Trophy last season as a junior. In his career, Griffin III amassed 12,644 all-purpose yards, including 10,366 passing yards, 2,254 rushing yards and 24 receiving yards. He completed 800-of-1,192 pass attempts (67.1 completion percentage), with 78 passing touchdowns and a 143.3 pass efficiency rating," according to the Redskins news release.

RGIII won the Heisman trophy his last season at Baylor.
