WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- The Washington Post says that William Raspberry, who was a columnist for the paper for almost 40 years and "one of the first black journalists to gain a widespread following," has died at age 76.

According to the Post, his wife said he had prostate cancer.

Raspberry won a Pulitzer Prize for Commentary and Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Black Journalists. He tackled controversial social issues such as race and poverty. His columns were carried in hundreds of newspapers, reports the Post. He retired from the paper in 2005.
