MANASSAS, Va. (WUSA) -- Prince William County officials say a 9-year-old girl saved a younger girl from drowning at a community pool in Manassas in June.
Thursday in a press release, the fire department officials said they wanted to recognize the older girl for her heroism. Officials say emergency crews were called to the Westgate Community Pool on June 26 for a drowning. When personnel arrived at the scene, they saw a 4-year-old girl crying at the side of the pool, accompanied by two lifeguards. She was taken to the hospital for treatment and recovery.
But while first responders were at the pool, they were told that a 9-year-old had noticed the four year old at the bottom of the pool. She realized the child was not playing there and pulled her from the bottom of the pool and pulled her over to the side. She then alerted the lifeguards about the other child. The lifeguards then began CPR.
Officials did not name either child in their release on Thursday.
