FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (WUSA) -- Two men are charged after an illegal durg transaction on Thursday night turned into a shooting in a parking lot in Spotsylvania County, say sheriff's office authorities.

Twenty-nine-year-old Matthew Johnson is charged with possession with the intent to distribute and 25-year-old Travis Burley is charged with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony after a shooting in the parking lot of Cancun Margarita Bar & Grill in the 3100 block of Plank Road.

Investigators say Burley and another person met Johnson in the parking lot for the drug transaction.  When Burley got into Johnson's car to finish the deal, they got into an argument which escalated with Burley taking out a semi-auto handgun. The two men struggled over the gun and Burley shot Johnson in the left hand and left calf. Burley also accidentally shot himself in the left hand.

Burley then fled to his vehicle and drove approximately 100 yards before  getting out to sit on the sidewalk. He then called 911 and waited for law enforcement to arrive. The other person he was with fled on foot. Authorities say Johnson drove himself to a nearby hotel where he called 911 as well.

Burley and Johnson were taken to Mary Washington Hospital for treatment.

Authorities say the handgun was recovered from Burley's car. Marijuana was recovered from Johnson's vehicle.
