(WUSA) -- Thousands of people around the country have computers that were infected with malicious software more than a year ago. Today, they face the possibility of not being able to get online.

Internet users scanning their Twitter feeds or Facebook accounts on Sunday were encouraged to add one more quick click to check their computer for malware.

After midnight, the FBI began shutting down the Internet servers that were set up to  temporarily keep infected computers online for the past eight months. The court order that the agency obtained to keep the servers running expired, and it was not renewed.

If your computer isn't connecting to the Internet, then this is what you need to do today to get back online.

First: You will have to contact your Internet service provider for help reconnecting to the Internet.

Second: Insist on guidance to also delete the malware.

If it's not taken off, the criminals will be able to continue to control your machine.

Internet service providers have tried to help keep victims online.
Comcast, for example, sent out e-mail, letters and Web notices to customers whose computers appeared to be affected.
