MOUNT VERNON, Va. (WUSA) -- One man is dead after a shootout with police in Mount Vernon late Sunday night.

According to Officer Shelley Broderick, spokeswoman for the Fairfax County Police Department, the deadly exchange of gunfire took place after officers encountered two male subjects acting suspiciously on Frye Road near Route 1 around 11:20 p.m. When the officers approached them, one of the subjects ran away.

The officers gave chase and ended up in altercation with the man, Broderick said. That's when the suspect pulled out a handgun and fired several shots at the officers. One of the officers returned fire, hitting the suspect. He was taken to Mount Vernon Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Officer Broderick says neither police officer was injured in the shootout. So far no detailed information about the suspect or officers involved in the exchange has been released. The second suspect involved remains at large.

The investigation is ongoing.
