GREENBELT, Md. (WUSA) -- U.S. Park Police are investigating a fatal crash on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway where two people have been hit by a vehicle on the side of the road.
Sergeant Paul Brooks, spokesman for the U.S. Park Police, says the two victims were hit as they were switching drivers on the shoulder of the parkway near Greenbelt Road (Rt. 193) around early Wednesday morning. Sgt. Brooks says one person has been pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim has been transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Sgt. Brooks confirms the striking vehicle stayed at the scene.
According to Sgt. Brooks, the northbound lanes of the BW Parkway are closed at Greenbelt Road while police conduct the investigation. The southbound lanes at Powder Mill Road have reopened. The Maryland State Highways Administration has also blocked access from the Outer Loop of the Beltway to northbound BW Parkway.
