WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- A woman was killed overnight when a fire broke out in her apartment on 17th Street in Southeast.
Firefighters responded to a blaze in a fourth-floor apartment located in the 1600 block of 17th Street just before 1:30 Wednesday morning. firefighters found the entire apartment consumed by fire and there was heavy extension. Fire official described "pack rat conditions" inside the apartment.
Police officials confirm a woman was found dead inside.
Residents on the fourth floor of the apartment building were evacuated while firefighters put out the flames, however, the rest of the building was not affected. Officials say there are some possible displacements but they are unsure how many people.
The investigation is ongoing.
