(WUSA) -- WITN in Eastern Carolina reports that Andy Griffith died Tuesday morning in Dare County. It cites former UNC President Bill Friday, a friend of the actor, as the source.
Friday told WITN that the 86-year-old actor died at his Dare County home around 7 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Griffith is most known for his role on "The Andy Griffith Show." He was also on the Ed Sullivan show in the 1950s. Healso produced and starred in the television series "Matlock."
Griffith received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005 from President George W. Bush (see the attached photo from that event).
Griffith was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina.
