(WUSA) -- Baltimore Gas and Electric Company officials say that as of 7 a.m. Monday BGE has restored service to 63 percent of its customers, or nearly 410,000, who lost power since Friday evening's storm.
BGE expects to be working on restoring power into the weekend.
According to BGE officials, more than 2,600 workers, including BGE personnel and out-of-state utility workers, are restoring power or en route to central Maryland.
BGE officials say "the backbone of the utility's electric distribution system, its 33 kilovolt (kV) power lines, which supply power to substations, sustained significant damage." The lines must be repaired or replaced before any other equipment can be repaired, according officials, so some customers may have to wait longer to have their power back than originally expected.
BGE likens the damage to its system to damage one would see during a hurricane or tropical storm. BGE's call center has handled more than 764,000 calls.
Customers who experience new outages or see downed wires should report them by calling 1-877-778-2222.
