  • KENSINGTON, Md. (WUSA) -- Early Monday morning, trees and power lines still covered southbound Connecticut Avenue in Kensington from Adams to Decatur. Traffic was down to one lane in each direction. At approximately 6:30 a.m., the Pepco crews finally showed up to start removing the power lines.

Sunday night, furious neighbors wanted to know why no one has done anything to clear several power poles and huge trees that were blocking all three lanes of inbound traffic on Connecticut Ave.

Just before the split at University, several trees fell across the road, snapping a pole and bringing down all the lines. A spokesman for the Maryland State Highway Administration told 9News Now's Bruce Leshan that crews cannot do anything about the trees until Pepco confirms that the lines are dead.

Southbound traffic was re-routed into the northbound lanes. But the detour was poorly marked with just a handful of small cones. Many drivers were forecasting long backups during Monday morning rush hour.

Monday morning, 9News Now's Kristin Fisher returned to the area, finding that the road was still not completely cleared and cones still marked the area. Watch the video above to see the update on conditions.
