WASHINGTON (WUSA) - The first day of summer is proving to be a hot one. With temperatures expected to soar throughout the weekend, the Smithsonian's National Zoo makes sure its animals and visitors are staying cool.

Most animals can choose to stay in their air-conditioned exhibit or go outside during the summer months. Animals are offered refreshing fruitsicles with fresh fruit in them, and can take a dip in the several outdoor pools.

If you're thinking about visiting the zoo this weekend, water fountains are available around the park, and water misters are also located throughout the property. You can cool down with a snow cone (my favorite) or stay in the animal houses that are air-conditioned.

Check out 23 "cool" PHOTOS of zoo animals beating the extreme temperatures!
